I went a little nuts on my Small Stone this week. It got a complete rehouse, plus a bunch of new mods. It already had a volume drop mod and the vibrato mod. Now the list runs:
- volume drop mod
- vibrato mod
- univibe mod - (viva Analog)
- phasefilter mod - (Mark Hammer / diystompboxes.com)
- depth knob
- separate sweep & regen switches (colour switch mod)
- a bypassable mosfet boost follower w/ level knob
- LED that pulses with rate setting (thanks to frequencycentral & puretube / diystompboxes.com)
I love all the mods. None of them seem redundant and they all really open up new sonic territories. The phasefilter mod is great, especially when paired with the vibrato setting and/or the univibe setting. The clean mosfet boost following the phaser is fanfreakingtastic. Not only can it get the phase to really punch through with a bit of extra volume and high freq, but with the depth knob down I can get a huge boost with just the slightest bit of movement from the phase. It sounds amazing. I wish I had done this years ago. Even just splitting the colour switch into independent sweep/regen switches is something I would recommend for everyone.
When starting these mods I challenged myself to not use any new parts out of my stock. I wanted to use up a bunch of old recycled switches, knobs, and all the little pieces of odd-length wire that tend to accumulate. It looks pretty hilarious inside, with old half-melted switches and long lengths of wire made up of several small pieces soldered together. In the end, I used up a lot of stuff that might have been thrown out otherwise. The only new “part” was the enclosure. Remind me to never use one of these again. Drilling it was a nightmare. It grabbed and sucked the drill bits and then buckled around the holes. I had to use a mallet to bang it out flat again. BUT…
I think I now have my ultimate phaser. Or maybe not. A 2/4/8/12 stage Small Stone with the above parameters would kill.
